We sell a minimum colony of 12-15 per species for the following reasons:  

Better coloration--Tropheus show stronger, more stable coloration when they feel secure in a proper group size

Natural colony behavior-- Tropheus species rely on group presence for confidence and coordinated movement; too few fish cause hiding, shyness, or most times bullied by dominant male

Reduced aggression-- In colony‑forming species like Tropheus, aggression is spread across the group, preventing bullying and territorial stress; small groups intensify aggression

Lower stress overall-- Proper group size reduces fear responses and helps fish behave more naturally, improving long‑term health
